Species Information: Tempests
Tempests are not like one species of the Night World... they are like all of them; a skill or power taken from each species.
Like a vampire, lamia or made; Tempest's have strong mind powers, also being able to control weak minds and communicate telepathically. They have control over one element, much like a witch. A Tempest has two other forms as well as his or her human form. They have the ability to shapeshift into an animal and a bird. This is a lot like a shapeshifters and their ancient rulers, the dragons.
It can be said that the Tempests are truly immortal. For if they are to die, they are reincarnated like an Old Soul. But they are not God's; they still feel pain and can suffer. Many Tempests have died in pain due to their only weakness, copper.
The Leaders of Clan Tempests are the originals: Layla and Isean Tempest. The Clan is then split into Sects. Each Sect has a Sage, a leader and wise person of the Sect. The second in command of each Sect is known as the Apprentice. They are skilled in the magical gift and fighting skill of the Sect and are well prepared to manage the Sect if anything happens to the Sage.
The History of Clan Tempest:
Clan Tempest was formed by Layla and Isean Tempest... the firsts.
Their mother sought true immortality. To do so she needed the spell that Maya Redfern had tried in her own search for Immortality, believing she knew how to make it succeed where Maya had failed. She searched for years for it and finally she found the book that contained it.
The spell needed the blood of a dragon and the blood of two people close to the person performing the spell. Maya had used two members of her tribe that she had been close to throughout her life. But Isean and Layla's mother thought she knew why Maya had failed. The blood needed to be that of the closest relatives of the witch performing the spell. It meant that she had to sacrifice her two daughters. If the spell succeeded she would be truly immortal, two children would not make a difference.
But their father found out what his wife was trying to do. He tried to save them by asking a vampire friend to make them like him. Isean believed her father, but Layla hated him for making up such a story about their mother. Despite fighting the vampire friend, she was not strong enough and both girls were changed. The spell itself required the human blood to be mixed with the dragon blood and placed upon their mother's skin. But since the girls were now made vampires. Their mother slit both their wrists, letting the blood drip into a bowl already filled with dragons blood which had taken her a long time to collect. Angry when she found that the spell did not work, she ran afraid of what would happen to her for killing her two daughters. Leaving them for dead, she had knocked over the bowl of their blood and dragon blood. As they lay, remaining alive and healing, the mixture of blood seeped into their wounds and skin.
As the girls healed and began life as vampires, they became aware of their growing powers. In mind... and in Body...
Their original witch blood had mixed with the vampire blood when they were changed. As they lay healing after their mother's attempt at the spell, the dragon blood had also mixed with their blood. They became strong witches, finding that they could control an element. As they grew stronger, they ran away, afraid of what their tribe would do when they found out about their increased powers.
As they hid from hunters, they found they could choose two animals where the dragon blood had mixed with their own. But their blood was diluted and so, unlike a dragon, they were limited to only two forms. A bird and an animal. As they traveled they each grew to one part of their heritage. Layla grew towards her vampiric instincts, finding that her mind powers were also increased.
While Isean grew towards her witch and shapeshifter heritage, taking time in choosing her animal form. While Isean stayed in one place, Layla went out exploring after disappearing after a blizzard. She soon found out that the Night World had grown bigger and she became involved with a vampire Lord. It was this involvement that led to her death and the discovery that Tempests never truly died, they returned like an Old Soul. For a century and a half later, a girl with the powers of a Tempest was born to a normal Lamia family. Layla.
Once reunited with her sister, Layla remembered her past life and what had killed her. A Copper tipped wooden Dagger.
A vampire hunter without honor had thought she was a vampire after seeing her with the Vampire Lord. The copper tip was only there so that the weapon could be used against humans as well. But instead it had been what had killed her... it was their weakness. Like wood for vampire, silver for shapeshifters and iron for witches.
Copper was what killed a Tempest. Unfortunately the Night World found out about the Tempest's increased powers. They were a threat and now that their weakness was known, they could be stopped.
The Tempests are continuing to be hunted by a band of Hunters formed by Drake Redfern. There are many Night Worlders who have run afoul the Tempests in the past. One was even Hunter Redfern. The Tempests also have not chosen any affliction to either the Night World or Circle Daybreak despite the battle over the Wild Powers. They keep away from most Night Worlders, only having contact with a few. The soulmate principle has seemed to always affect the Tempests but their soulmates always seem to be within the Clan. Unlike other Night Worlders, the soulmate principle does not attract other Night people to them and vice versa.
Within the Night World, a black violet represents all Tempests.
