For Janet. By M'lyn. "I'm here." Faye dropped into a chair in Diana's room and looked put out at the world. Diana ignored the look, knowing it was Faye's customary expression whenever she was in her cousin's presence. Diana finished arranging moon stones in a circle and sat back on her heels, thinking a quick spell for calmness before looking at Faye. "Did you bring the things on the list?" Faye picked up a plastic shopping bag from near her feet and tossed it into Diana's lap. "Look, I have a ton of things I'd much rather being doing, so-" "No, you look." Diana occupied herself with opening the bag and laying out supplies. "We have to do this with calm emotions, and right now I'm having a hard time even managing that for myself. If you want to get this done quickly, then quit being a brat." She smothered a small smile at Faye's shocked silence, then looked up when Faye moved. Her cousin slipped off her heels and kneeled outside of the circle across from her. "Fine." Faye held out her hands palms up, nails flashing red in the candle light. She flashed a kittenish smile. "Please feel free to begin, Di-Di." Diana allowed a small frown at the use of Faye's childhood pet name for her, but concentrated on the spell she'd written. Laying a bundle of sage in Faye's hand, she murmured "Crush that," then went back to preparing the small leather pouch in front of her. Inside were small pieces of pure quartz and black obsidian, some sea salt, and Diana sprinkled the purified water Faye had brought on the outside of the pouch. When the sage was ready, she added that and tied off the opening. A candle was in the center of the circle, and she passed the pouch above its flame three times. "Does Cassie know you're doing this?" Diana smiled brightly and held the pouch up in her right hand, meeting Faye's amused gaze. "Nope." Faye tilted her head and covered Diana's hand with her right one, so that they were cupping the pouch together. She looked down at Diana's spell on a sheet of paper. "Unification," she murmured. "Maybe she should know that you're doing illicit spells..." "This will be enormously helpful to the coven. Besides, you agreed, so we're partners in crime." Faye wiggled her eyebrows, then composed herself as Diana began. "Two hearts, once united, through troubles now divided. By air and water, fire and sand, allow us now to together stand." The spell was simple enough, but the power behind it considerable. A small shock wave passed through the circle, making Faye and Diana sway where they kneeled. When it had passed, they looked at each other. "Think it worked?" "Only one way to find out." Diana felt the bag. Just as she'd planned, the contents had changed to a fine sand, everything mixed together until the separate ingredients were indistinguishable from each other. Faye blinked. Can you hear me? Diana smiled. You know I can. They scrambled to their feet, both heading outside with the same intention. Going straight down the road to Adam's house, they knocked furiously until Adam answered, looking flushed and frowning. "What?" "Tell Cassie-" Faye began. "To call the coven!" Diana broke in and finished her sentence. He blinked. "Okay, that's just too weird. Come in and wait down here." He went upstairs, then returned with Cassie following. She was combing her hair with her fingers and looked flushed as well. Faye and Diana exchanged a look. "What is it?" Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Cassie crossed her arms and looked back and forth between the two girls. "We did this unification spell-" "So we could get along with each other a little better-" "And now we can talk to each other with our minds!" "And goddess knows what else." Adam's frown deepened. "You're putting us on. How do we know you're telling the truth?" Diana proposed a test. Faye went into another room with Adam, who got out his Book of Shadows and opened to a random page. He counted down to the seventh word in the spell on that page. Faye held it in her mind. "INFUSE!" Diana called out, practically jumping in her place. "It's a spell calling for an infusion of apple peels!" She and Cassie hurried into the other room. Faye was smirking and holding the book, while Adam had sunk into a chair. "She's right. Goddess, Cassie, they can talk to each other!" His voice was shaky. Cassie checked the book. She looked up at the two bright, excited faces in front of her, and smiled. "Guess we need to call the coven." Back to the main page. Disclaimer: the characters, fictional settings, and universes created by L. J. Smith are copyright © Lisa J.
